The National Pan-Hellenic Council was established in 1930 at Howard University as a national coordinating body for the nine historically African American Fraternities and Sororities, which had evolved on American college and university campuses by that time. Blatant racism had prevented many African American students on historically white campuses from joining general fraternities and sororities. African Americans were denied admittance to large numbers of campuses, which still prohibited blacks from attending. Therefore, African American students on both types of campuses established fraternities and sororities to enhance their college experiences. These organizations did not then nor do they now restrict membership to African Americans. They have developed, however, a distinctive African American style in their activities both social and philanthropic.

  • 1911 Howard University-Omega Psi Phi Fraternity
  • 1913 Howard University-Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
  • 1914 Howard University-Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity

We would advise you to look into all of the other NPHC organizations so that you can make an informed decision on choosing which organization you'd like to affiliate yourself with. Membership in any Greek organization is not just a "college experience", but also a lifetime commitment. Be prepared to give your all once you join.

Keep in mind your decision to join an organization should be something you decided, not because of others.

Everyone must speak for himself or herself.

There are good and bad reasons to join a fraternity/sorority.

Let's address them:

If you are only concerned with images and stereotypes

You don't need to pledge at all.

Everywhere you go, each organization will be viewed a certain way based on the members in those areas. Not to mention some close-minded assumptions that some people grew up with, we all have had them before.
But what you are is what you bring to the organization and what you bring to the organization is what the organization becomes.

If you want to join only to advance socially by aligning yourself with a “Greek” letter organization.

Pledge something else.

If you don't have "game" now, don't think that three letters across your chest will make you any more or less attractive or popular.

If you want to join only to get into parties for free.

Become a member of someone's auxiliary group.  There are plenty of them running around your town as well as ours. Choose one and join.

If you want to join just to get closer to one or more of the members of one organization or another,

Join an auxiliary group or just give yourself to the person if they will have you.

Our organizations don't need anymore dead weight.

If you want to join only to say

“I pledged”.

You could start your own organization. Why not?

There have been plenty of independent so-called "Greek" letter organizations to pop up because someone dropped line or someone has animosity towards a particular fraternity/sorority.

Others want to have the "privileges" and image that come with saying that you're a "Greek", but don't want to pledge an NPHC organization.

Anyone can take three letters and make an organization.

But do you know the significance of the BGLO (Black Greek Letter Organization) movement in the US?

Do you know of its origin?

It's traditions?

There are a few good reasons to pledge a fraternity/sorority

If you have a desire to help the community and uplift the image of the African-American and or if you are a American or a citizen of the earth from anywhere and of any race who believes in the values and principles we Greeks stand on.

Then you can become Greek.

We all have PLENTY of work we can put you to doing as soon as you cross over.

We always need people who are about the business of our organizations.

Think about it…
